E. Remipes occurs at Lang’s Quarry in what is known as the Herkimer Pool, interpreted to be an intertidal estuary pool where eurypterids gathered to feed, mate, and molt. Herkimer Pool had conditions ideal for preservation of these rare and fascinating early marine arthropods.

While previous research argued that E. Remipes lived in hypersaline conditions in sabkha-like environments, new work (Vrazo et al. 2015) postulates that they probably lived in more typical-salinity shallow marine environments. There is also evidence that E. remipes and related pterygotid species were some of the first Paleozoic animals to venture onto land, and the walking legs located at the prosoma (head) may have been adapted for brief ventures on land. While eurypterids obviously hold an important place in unraveling Paleozoic biodiversity and marine taxonomy, their highly-restricted occurrence and the rarity of complete specimens have precluded more detailed correlation across various formations and time periods. Some Eurypterids reached over 2.2 meters long(!), and all species were probably carnivores occupying high trophic levels in their ecosystems.

I’m pleased to be able to offer some of the fascinating fossils at what I think are very competitive prices- please email me directly at: philip.m.persson(at)gmail.com for inquiries or questions. I have more of these and will be updating this page periodically over the next few weeks. -Phil

E1: $150.00
This specimen measures slightly over 7.5 cm long and features nicely-articulated metesoma body segments with one complete ‘paddle’ swimming leg, with the other swimming leg being partial. Several partial walking legs projecting from the prosoma (head) are also visible. A nice example of this rare and beautiful species from a classic locale. Sits on a professionally trimmed and sawn matrix slab for display.

Specimen Dimensions: 11 x 9.5 x 2.3 cm. overall; 7.5 x 3.4 cm. E. remipes.
E2: $400.00

While the two main eurypterids on this plate are missing their swimming paddles and telsons, they show excellent prosoma & metasoma body segment preservation as well as well-formed eyes. There is also a third partial ‘bug’ with swimming legs as you can see in the photos. If these were complete specimens with this level of preservation and specimen size, this would be a mid-4 figures plate: as it is I think it provides a lot of ‘bang for the buck’ and wonderfully represents the locality and species. Sits on a professionally trimmed and sawn matrix slab for display. Note this plate weighs nearly 11 lbs. so while I will find the cheapest (and safest) shipping option for you, there may be some additional cost for overseas shipping.

Specimen Dimensions: 36 x 17.5 x 5.5 cm. overall; up to  13.5 x 5.5 cm. E. remipes. (weight = 10.8 lbs. or 4.9 kg)

E3: $350.00 SOLD
This E. remipes specimen measures slightly over 16 cm. long from prosoma to metasoma end (edge of the plate) and features a nicely-articulated metasoma with two mostly complete ‘paddle’ swimming legs, as well as several swimming legs (near prosoma/head). A great large example of this rare and beautiful species from a classic locale. Sits on a professionally trimmed and sawn matrix slab for display.

Specimen Dimensions: 19.5 x 14 x 2 cm. overall; 16 x 11.2 cm. E. remipes.
E4: $500.00
This plate measures ~40 x 13 x 2.3 cm. and both the juvenile E. remipes specimens are quite complete, each measuring 3.5 cm. The pterygotid claw is excellently preserved showing the serrated claw edges. There is also a pterygotid body part measuring 2.7 cm. at the left edge of the plate. Don’t miss this fantastic upper Silurian fossil plate of a desirable and rare assemblage.

Specimen Dimensions: 40 x 13.5 x 2.3 cm. overall; weight = 3.2 kg or 6.8 lbs.
E5: $150.00

This specimen measures slightly over 11.5 cm. long from prosoma to metasoma end and features a nicely-articulated metasoma (tail) with one complete ‘paddle’ swimming leg, as well as visible eyes; quite well-preserved. 3 walking legs are also attached to one side of the prosoma (head) which is fairly rare. A very nice example of this rare and beautiful species from a classic locale. Sits on a professionally trimmed and sawn matrix slab for display.

Specimen Dimensions: 15.5 x 10.5 x 2 cm. overall; 11.5 x 5.5 cm. E. remipes.
E6: $150.00
This specimen measures slightly over 8.5 cm. long and features nicely-articulated metesoma body segments with one mostly complete ‘paddle’ swimming leg. The metasoma segments are nicely preserved with the serrated edges of each segment easily visible. A nice example of this rare and beautiful species from a classic locale. Sits on a professionally trimmed and sawn matrix slab for display.

Specimen Dimensions: 14 x 8 x 2 cm. overall; 8.5 x 3.2 cm. E. remipes.
E7: $200.00
This specimen measures slightly over 9 cm. long from prosoma to telson end and features a nicely-articulated telson with one complete and one partial ‘paddle’ swimming leg, as well as visible eyes, one quite well-preserved. A nice example of this rare and beautiful species from a classic locale. Sits on a professionally trimmed and sawn matrix slab for display.

Specimen Dimensions: 11 x 9.5 x 2 cm. overall; 9 x 8.2 cm. E. remipes.
E8: $200.00

This specimen measures slightly over 10 cm. long and features a nicely-articulated telson with one complete and one partial ‘paddle’ swimming leg, as well as most of the walking legs. There is also a second partial eurypterid as you can see. There has been some stabilization work to the matrix, but this was professionally done and is not obvious (see the photo of the back of the specimen). A nice example of this rare and beautiful species from a classic locale.

Specimen Dimensions: 13 x 12 x 2.5 cm. overall; 10 x 6.5 cm. E. remipes.
