While most collectors would not typically associate Iowa with fine minerals, the Linwood mine, an underground calcite/dolomite mine started around WWII, has produced some arguably world-class examples of Calcite, Barite, and Marcasite over the past few years. The bright luster, great aesthetics, and varied style of these specimens help re-define these species for the Midwestern USA. The Linwood Mine in located near the town of Buffalo on the Mississippi river near Davenport, and supplies unusually pure, high-quality calcium carbonate for a variety of agricultural and industrial uses. The mine uses room-and-pillar mining on several levels, and occasionally, large pockets containing high-quality crystals are encountered in a vuggy brecciated bed in the limestone formation being mined.

I am lucky to have a connection ‘to the source’ via a friend in the Midwest, so I am offering some nice NEW specimens from the Linwood Mine at what I hope are reasonable prices. Get a good representative specimen from this classic locale before they are gone! -Phil Persson, Jan 25th, 2016
