Uraninite var. Pitchblende, “Gummite”

Superb large, dense, solid specimen of uraninite with minor colorful secondary “gummite” type uranium minerals from the famous Ranger mine in northeastern Australia. This remote uranium mine was one of the highest-grade open pit type uranium operations in the world in it’s day and produced millions of tons of U3O8 for atomic energy and weaponry. Good large specimens from this long-closed locality are very hard to come by and this impressive example is from the noted collection of Brent Lockhart and comes with a custom acrylic display base by the Sunnywood Collection. It measures an impressive 250,000+ CPM on my Ludlum Model 3 Counter with the 44-9 probe. Previously part of the Colorado School of Mines collection. Rare!!
