The Karelia beryl mine pegmatite, located in the famous Rapaviki granite region of southern Finland, is perhaps Europe’s only locality for large, gem-quality heliodor beryl crystals, which started being found around 20 years ago when this pegmatite was discovered on the side of a recently-built road by local prospectors. Subsequently it has yielded rare miarolitic pockets with superb, beautiful yellow-green gem-quality beryl crystals, exceptionally to multiple kilograms and 20+ cm! This is an excellent 7 x 5 cm. etched gem heliodor crystal from the major 2004 pocket, likely the most significant pocket found at the Karelia beryl mine pegmatite. It weighs a hefty 250 grams, and has beautiful color and good-sized gem-quality internal areas. While one termination is not complete, the base and prism faces are in good condition, and this is still a rare example of a large gem heliodor from this famous find which was not faceted or broken up into carving material.
