Native Copper: Lake Superior Copper District, Houghton County, Michigan USA

Description

Species: Native Copper

Locality: Lake Superior Copper District, Houghton County, Michigan USA

Dimensions: 23 x 12.5 x 11 cm.

This is an excellent, very large and 3-dimensional group of sharp twinned tetrahexahedral copper crystals forming a cluster without matrix from the iconic Lake Superior Copper District, Houghton County, Michigan USA. The copper crystals have a rich red cuprite patina, and show a variety of morphologies, though most common is the classic twinned tetrahexahedron. This fine large copper can be displayed from a variety of orientations, and has good crystals on all sides. One small geode-like vug amongst the crystals even hosts a sharp ~2 cm copper-included calcite crystal! Just a wonderful and impressive large “museum-style” Michigan copper that in fact has a museum provenance- it is from the collection of the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum in Houghton, Michigan.
