The Russell garnet mine is the source of the famous “Russell Garnets” which have been prized by collectors and museums for nearly two hundred years. Good specimens from the uber-classic New England locality have become quite scarce on the modern mineral marketplace, as most were collected prior to 1900. This choice cabinet-size specimen features a sharp, dark red, nearly 5 cm. crystal with smaller garnet crystals on pegmatite matrix. A fine example of a rare New England classic from the Jim Chenard and Ted Johnson collections. Annette Slade photo.
