The Milpillas mine, an underground copper mine located in northern Mexico in Sonora State, has become a household name in the mineral collecting world over the past decade as the source of what many collectors consider the world’s finest azurite crystals. This particular specimen shows one of my favorite “styles” of Milpillas azurite, where sharp, large azurite crystals have been replaced by malachite and then overgrown by a second generation of highly-lustrous, parallel-growth azurite crystals. A beautiful and striking azurite and malachite miniature from this now iconic locality. Annette Slade photo.
