Species: Quartz var. Amethyst, Hematite
Locality: Moonlight mine, Pearl Station, Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada
Dimensions: 7.0 x 6.0 x 2.0 cm.
Amethyst specimens from Canada’a rugged Thunder Bay region are world-famous for their distinctive and beautiful aesthetics, which are imparted by sub-surface inclusions and coatings of red hematite, which contrast with the rich purple amethyst color. In recent years, several mines in the area have been producing fine amethyst specimens, but the finest material has been coming from the Moon Light mine, a small, private mine that is not open to collecting. This fine small cabinet-size specimen exhibits the top luster, color, and hematite inclusions that Thunder Bay amethyst can have, giving it a mesmerizing look that really stands out in a display case. The crystals have a “wet” luster, and are in fine condition, with rich purple color and gorgeous hematite inclusions. Mark Cross photo.
