Species: Quartz var. Amethyst, Hematite
Locality: Ontario Gem mine, McTavish Township, Thunder Bay, Canada
Dimensions: 13.5 x 9.0 x 8.0 cm.
Amethyst specimens from Canada’a rugged Thunder Bay region are world-famous for their distinctive and beautiful aesthetics, which are imparted by sub-surface inclusions and coatings of red hematite, which contrast with the rich purple amethyst color. This fine specimen is from the lesser-known Ontario Gem Mine in McTavish Township, which has been closed for over 20 years. It features large crystals to 3.5 cm. exhibiting the top luster, color, and hematite inclusions that Thunder Bay amethyst can have, giving it a mesmerizing look that really stands out in a display case. The crystals have a “wet” luster, and are in fine condition, with good purple color and gorgeous hematite inclusions. Thunder Bay amethyst of this quality is NOT common, and this superb large cabinet-size specimen would be a great addition to any collection! Mark Cross photo.
