This is an exceptional example of lustrous well-formed bladed to saddle-shaped vibrant pink rhodochrosite crystals on contrasting jet-black sphalerite crystal matrix from the Eagle Mine in Gilman, Eagle County, Colorado USA. The Eagle mine was for many years Colorado’s most prolific producer of mineral specimens. Closed since 1984, specimens such as this excellent example are now considered classics for Colorado.
This specimen is from the collection of noted Gilman, Colorado mineral expert William “Bill” Warren, and was then acquired by another collector in a trade in October of 1975. This is an exceptional rhodochrosite on sphalerite specimen from Gilman, really about as good as it gets for the species at this classic locality from what I have seen. Annette Slade photo. Classic!
