This is a nice rich specimen of waxy black botryoidal pitchblende in reddish calcite matrix from the famous Schneeberg Mining District, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany. These ancient Ag-Bi-Cu-U veins were worked for uranium by the Soviets until the 1980s and produced some fine examples of uranium species, such as this quite “hot” pitchblende specimen that measures ~125,000 CPM on my Ludlum model 3 counter with the 44-9 probe.
