This is an excellent and very large Japanese rhodochrosite specimen from the famous Oppu mine, showing attractive pink color and typical botryoidal form. What makes the piece special other than the large size (and good condition for it’s size) is the underlying layer of well-formed prismatic quartz crystals to ~4.5 cm which have been totally overgrown by rhodochrosite. A real classic which has become hard to find in this size for a reasonable price! Ex. Jean Hamel, Scott Williams, and Richard Shupe collections. Mark Cross photo.
