The West Cumbrian Iron Ore Field in northern England needs no introduction to most collectors as the source of some of the world’s finest and most prized specimens of calcite, hematite, and barite, as well as other species. The Bigrigg mine, located in the village of Egremont, produced some of the most distinctive and classic calcite specimens for the district, such as this choice cabinet-size example. The photo does not really convey the very high luster, transparency and perfection of the calcite crystals on this piece, which are up to 3.5 cm in size and are placed aesthetically on brown hematite matrix. A true European mineral classic, this fine old piece comes from a museum collection and was likely collected in the late 19th century. In excellent condition as well, not typical for these old pieces. Please ask to see a short video of this wonderful British calcite. Annette Slade photo.
