Species: Pallasite Meteorite (Olivine, Nickel, Iron)
Locality: Fukang Meteorite Fall, Fukang County, Changji Autonomous Region, Xinjiang, China
Dimensions: 9 x 5 x .3 cm. (52 grams)
The Fukang meteorite, a pallasite discovered in western China’s Xinjiang region in recent decades, is considered by some connoisseurs to be the world’s most beautiful example of the treasured pallasite meteorites. While I don’t normally deal in meteorites or profess to be an expert in them, I recently got a handful of nice ones in the collection of Herb Gregor (1929-2020), the best being this gorgeous 52 gram pallasite. The olivine crystals in this polished slice are quite large for this meteorite (up to 4 cm!), and when backlit to show the transparent crystals, this piece of ‘space rock’ is simply stunning.
