The Black Cloud mine, an underground Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag mine operated by ASARCO and the last mine to close (~1995) in the Leadville District, has produced some of Colorado’s finest galena specimens. This choice cabinet-size example features well-formed cubic crystals with a very unusual matte luster and slightly “melted” appearance which I have not seen in Black Cloud mine specimens before. Reminiscent of the more recent galena specimens from Bulgaria, this classic Colorado specimen is from the noted collection of Tom Rosemeyer who acquired it in the early 1990s. Mark Cross photo.
