The Milpillas mine, an underground copper mine located in northern Mexico in Sonora State, has become a household name in the mineral collecting world over the past decade as the source of what many collectors consider the world’s finest azurite crystals. This particular specimen shows one of my favorite “styles” of Milpillas azurite, where sharp, vibrant bright blue azurite crystals to ~1.5 cm are isolated on contrasting white matrix. A gorgeous Milpillas mine azurite in totally pristine condition, with great display aesthetics. With the mine now closed and the publication of a special new issue of the Mineralogical Record, Milpillas is sure to become a “classic” locality. Annette Slade photo.
